about

AF Album Guest Liner Written Material

Album Description:

I've spent a lot of the last year traveling, sleeping in my tent, on couches, and floors, in the back of a car, on yoga mats on a deck, in luxurious guest bedrooms. There was Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Then the hikes in Colorado and in California, work in Canada...oh man, I should be able to remember this.

I like being a guest. It makes me more polite, more patient, more social. I do things with my hosts I wouldn’t normally enjoy. It’s fun to get to know how someone lives, and to join that life, even if only for a little while.

My tent in Denver felt like home, for a while. A place I could go that was safe and familiar, if not comfortable. Then the sprinklers came on at four in the morning and sprayed my rain fly at point blank range. It sounded like a sheet of paper being torn in half, except the paper was my brain.

One day I woke up and found a syringe and a used condom ten feet from my vestibule. As soon as eight a.m. came around Denver's summer sun would swivel over me and raise the temperature to a hundred a fifty degrees. The streetlights made darkness an impossibility. The lawn service came and weed whacked around me. Urban camping holds many perils.

I was grateful to be there. Grateful to have two lovely people around every morning. To walk my cousin's dog with him. To go to the cafe and work, and drink giant, sugary, coffee milkshakes. A hotel is a little more convenient. But this is more fun.
